Finding the right student accommodation in Japan is an important part of your study experience. Explore your options and choose a stay that fits your budget, lifestyle and study plans.
Student dormitories and residences
A good starting point if you would like to live with other students. Some schools offer their own housing or introduce partner residences. Bedrooms may be private or shared, while kitchens, bathrooms and other facilities may be communal.
Ask about furnishings, support staff, minimum stays and house rules. Confirm whether the residence is school-operated or independently managed.
Share houses
Share houses offer shared kitchens and living spaces with private bedrooms or shared rooms. They can suit students who enjoy meeting people and are comfortable sharing facilities. Residents may include students and working adults.
Homestays
Staying with a host family can offer opportunities to experience daily life in Japan and practise Japanese outside the classroom. Meals, household routines and facilities depend on the arrangement.
Discuss dietary needs, allergies and other preferences before booking, and ask which requests the provider can accommodate.
Private apartments
An apartment can suit students who prefer their own space. Furnished monthly apartments and conventional rental apartments have different booking procedures, initial costs and contract terms.
Check furnishings, utility setup, minimum stays and any guarantor or guarantee-company requirements before committing.
Temporary arrival accommodation
A hotel, hostel or serviced apartment may be useful if you arrive before your main accommodation is available. Choose somewhere convenient for your arrival and onward journey.
Accommodation for short-term study
Ask your school about homestays, residences and furnished stays available for your exact dates. Minimum booking periods vary.
Compare the total stay price, including booking charges, utilities, meals and commuting.
Accommodation for long-term study
Compare school-arranged housing with independent residences, share houses and apartments.
Consider contract length, daily travel and the cost of moving if your plans change.
Look beyond the advertised rent
Request a breakdown of the total cost. Depending on the property, charges may include:
- Rent, management fees and utilities
- Deposits, booking fees and cleaning charges
- For some rentals: key money, agent fees and guarantee fees
- Furniture, bedding, internet and household supplies
- Meals, laundry and transport to school
School-arranged housing
Your school can be a useful starting point for accommodation advice. Ask whether it manages housing, books through a partner or provides introductions.
Confirm who handles payments, contracts and support during your stay.
Booking independently
Independent booking may give you more choice. Check that the provider accepts your circumstances and length of stay.
Review the contract, payment terms and door-to-door commute before booking.
Your accommodation checklist
- Is a room available for my exact dates?
- Is the bedroom private, and which facilities are shared?
- What is the total cost, and what does it include?
- How long is the journey to school?
- What are the minimum stay and cancellation terms?
- Are there age restrictions, curfews or visitor rules?
- Who can help if I have a problem during my stay?
Ask schools about accommodation
Compare schools in your preferred destination and include your accommodation preferences in your school inquiry.
Share your dates, approximate housing budget and preferred room type so schools can explain the options they support.
